My son Zac has been at Dee Banks since he was 2 and a half. At nearly age 16 now, the school has grown considerably since he started. I have been involved as a governor for the last nine years, and chair of governors for eight of those. I am very proud of our school and how it puts our children first and governors are always mindful of that in our planning and moving forwards.

I am the programme leader of the masters course in special educational needs at the University of Chester as well as the area lead for special needs in initial teacher education at the university. I have worked with Ray and the school for many years on a variety of projects related to improving knowledge, skills and understanding of our student teachers, because of this strong partnership and the quality of the training and support our students received I decided that I would give something back to the school be becoming a governor.

I am a Senior Lecturer in Education at Liverpool John Moores University.  I taught for 22 years in Secondary Schools and became a Senior Leader.   One of my pupils was Ray Elliot’s son and he was a governor at one of the schools I worked at.  I have always been really interested in Special Education but have never worked in a Special School.   One of my friends son Callum Gallagher attended Dee Banks and I know how much he loved the school. I joined the chair of governors to offer my expertise in education but more for a passion for working with young people and doing something to contribute to  my community.  My links with Dee Banks have helped me in my own role training teachers and I believe  that whatever you give in life is what you get back.  I certainly gain much from supporting   Dee Banks and I am very grateful to be associated with such a wonderful school.

I have been a governor since 2010 and that I am a local resident living close to Dee Banks School.  I am married to a Dutchman who is a retired Hydrographic Surveyor.  I lived in Amsterdam for five years and did secretarial work for the World Health Organisation and then in 1988 moved to Jakarta, Indonesia, with my husband.  There I helped out at one of the orphanages together with other expats and also taught English to middle management of one of the large companies in Jakarta.  I also interviewed Chinese and Indonesian couples who wished to send their children to school in Britain and helped them to select a suitable boarding school.

I am a retired assistant factory manager and Chemical Engineer by profession.
Father of two daughters of whom Hilary is learning disabled (brain damaged at birth).
Retired early to care for Hilary when wife died. Did this as a single parent for eight years.
As chairman of Wirral Mencap organised the establishment of a residential home in West Kirby which Hilary eventually joined, happily for many years; allowing me to devote more time to other learning disabled activities locally and nationally.
Elected to Mencap’s National Council, becoming Vice Chairman and eventually stepped down as a Vice President of Royal Mencap.
When asked to become a Local Authority Governor I was pleased to have the opportunity to use my business experience, varied interest in learning disability, as well as being a hands-on parent, to help Dee Banks School in any way I could.  I’m halfway into the the second of a four year term.
This very disadvantaged and much neglected section of our community needs all the help we can give it; and I hope I can usefully contribute.

Hi I’m Julie and I have been a staff governor since 2011, I have worked  as  a TA at Dee Banks school for 24 years( I know I am one of the oldies).  Working in our school is one of the most rewarding and enjoyable  jobs that a person could have , from the littlest eye movement to a child taking their first step or saying their first word,   you could never  explain the emotion that you feel. I worked in a classroom for 22years but for the last two I have had the role of working with the  children who are eligible for pupil  premium taking individual children out to work on a 1.1  or in a small group this has been so much fun and very rewarding as I get to work with children from all the classes throughout school.
I also work with a theatre company where I help to run three young people’s theatre groups, this also makes me feel very proud , and I hope that I bring some of the fun and laughter that I have back to our pupils in school.
