Holding the Space

Communication is so important for the pupils & staff in Maple class. Every behaviour that is shown is for a reason & is a means of communication & it is therefore vitally important that it is acknowledged. Several times a week we hold specific communication sessions called "Holding the Space" in which we aim to encourage comunication between the pupils & to acknowkedge their communication as valuable. 

The main focus is on being together as a group -both pupils & staff. A bell is rung to indiate the start of the session & then we silently watch & wait, only vocalising in response to the movements or sounds of the students. As the children have become more familiar with these sessions they have gradually begun to respond to each other, communicating in different ways appropriate to them as an individual. 

This has become a very popular session for both pupils & staff. The children will begin to communicate almost immediately & some sessions can be very noisy!
