Informal Pathway
Overview
For some of our pupils, a highly structured learning environment with expectations to attend to adult-led activities can be very challenging. An informal curriculum, exploring different activities and resources to develop preferences provides more developmentally appropriate learning opportunities and allows for many skills to be taught when pupils are ready to engage.
Key Domains
The core learning opportunities within the informal curriculum fall into the following areas:
Communication skills are fostered throughout with a flexible approach to developing and building upon interactions as they occur. Experiences within and beyond the school community are expanded as part of regular routines with pupils becoming increasingly more independent over time. Sensory needs are addressed for individual pupils in order to promote self-regulation and increase engagement. As for all pupils, preparation for transitioning to an appropriate adult pathway is prioritised as they progress through school.
