Physiotherapy

Role of the Therapist

The physiotherapists are part of the Therapy team and work along side other members of the multidisciplinary team, such as Occupational Therapists and Speech and Language Therapists. Physiotherapy is aimed at helping children to develop and maintain their mobility skills, joint range of movement, muscle strength and motor (movement) skills. We also assess for equipment such as mobility aids and standing frames.

We provide advice to school staff, carers, parents and carers regarding appropriate therapy activities and program. Encouraging exercise and improving access to the curriculum is a very important aspect of a child’s well being.

Postural management is also a very important aspect of physiotherapy, therefore making sure the child has a change of position throughout the day, lying on a mat, standing frame, in chair. This will help good a good posture and support the spine.

Any other information
Following consent from parents, referrals can be made by a consultant (if the child meets the referral criteria). The referral will be placed on a waiting list and a appropriate therapist will see the child. The therapist will send the family a appointment date to meet and go over the program, which can be completed during the evenings, weekend and over the school holidays.
