Welcome to Cedar class

Children: 4 boys and 2 girls

Staff: Elaine, Michelle, Rachel & Abbie

Cedar class  spend lots of time in the local community. We are learning to do our weekly shopping and enjoy visiting the local café. We do our weekly travel training which helps us to cross the roads using puffin crossings and zebra crossings.  This has really developed our confidence and enabled us to become more independent when out in the community.

We also focus on mindfulness and have incorporated some relaxation sessions into the week where we can practice breathing exercises and Kireiki and yoga. This has really helped us to learn how to relax and be calm.

Our ASDAN modules this year are ‘Understanding Money’, ‘Developing ICT Skills’, ‘Using a Community Facility’, ‘Providing Personal Information’ and ‘Participation in a Mini Enterprise Project’.

We have had a very busy term in Cedar class, with activities both within the classroom and out and about in the community. We have really enjoyed our Zumba classes with Carly at the County Offices, lots of smiles and boogies all round.  We are becoming really confident with our shopping and especially like using the self service tills in the local supermarkets.  We are getting stuck into our Creative Studies project. We made props for our Christmas show and are now looking at world arts. We are currently enjoying working on an aboriginal art display for outside the classroom.

This term we have been busy setting up our Enterprise project ‘Cedar Sandwiches’ selling sandwiches to staff on a Wednesday.  This has helped us to practice our shopping routines, locating items in the supermarket and using the ‘scan and go’ checkouts.  We have also been reinforcing our money handling skills, counting the weekly takings.  This project has been very successful so far and is becoming an established part of the school week. We really enjoyed a visit to the cinema to see Dumbo and also a dinner at Frankie & Benny’s  as a reward for all our hard work.
